Your Video Driver * Using the Search Engine

How to Link to this Website

· Your Video Driver

One of the most critical elements at this phase in your web-surfing experience is to ensure that your computer monitor is properly configured to display web pages at the resolution (screen size) for which the pages were designed. If you have been finding that certain web pages appear to be too wide for your monitor, and you are constantly having to use a scroll bar at the bottom of your browser window to see the right-hand side of the page, then your monitor's display setting is the most likely culprit.

To check and/or change the display setting in WinXP, simply right-click a blank area on your desktop (not an icon) and select PROPERTIES then the SETTINGS tab. On some older OS's, you may have to press the START button, then select SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL, then DISPLAY and finally the SETTINGS tab. Got all that? The optimal video display (screen area) setting is 1024 x 768, although the site will display properly at the minimum setting of 960 x 720. From this dialog screen, you may also check and/or adjust your monitor's color settings.

Speaking of color, another very important factor is to determine if your monitor is configured to display at least 256 colors while browsing the web. The default settings on many older monitors are for just 16 colors. This will cause many of the high resolution images imbedded in web pages to appear course and blotchy. In some instances, certain images and custom background designs may not even be displayed at all! As described in the previous paragraph, users of Win98 and newer OS's may make color adjustments in the same manner and at the same time as adjusting the screen resolution.

An excellent source of FREE downloadable drivers and information about video cards and drivers is available by following this link to the Trident Microsystems Video Drivers website.

PS: Before attempting any technical modification of your system's configuration, you should always consult your documentation.

HACKER'S NOTE: If on an old 3.x OS, you do end up losing your video, just reboot your computer to DOS (remember DOS?) and at the C:/ prompt, type windows/setup and hit Enter. Simply re-select the old settings you had before you screwed everything up, then re-boot.

· Using the Search Engine

You may or may not have heard of the term, but a Search Engine is among the most powerful tools to aid you in navigating the Web.

Essentially, a search engine is nothing more than a very efficient software application housed on a very powerful, very busy computer that you can access and command to search the entire Internet for information that you specifically ask it to find. In a matter of seconds, it will search through literally millions of "documents" or HomePages on the Web and provide you with a report, a list of locations or URL's (Uniform Resource Locators) that contain at least some information about the subject matter you requested. Then, all you do is click on the items on the list, one at a time, until you find the one that has all the information you need.

We have included both the YAHOO and Google search engines, accessible from the SEARCH button on the left side of the main index page of the website. To use either, all you do is type a word or phrase into the blank field and click on the SEARCH button.

Since many search engines look at each word as an individual entry, phrases should be enclosed in "quotes" so that the search is conducted for documents with all of the words you typed instead of documents that contain each of them. In other words, a search for "Rim Country" in quotes will result in a report with this web site (RimCountry.Com) fairly close to the top of a relatively short list, whereas a search for the words Rim Country without quotes will result in a report containing every document on the Internet that contains either of the words "rim" and "country" ... obviously a much longer list.

A second and very useful search engine that we have included for you on the web site is Yahoo's People Finder. This utility allows you to type in someone's name, and it will tell you if they have an eMail address! It also has a reverse look-up function, and several other rather amazing features.
